Get ready to pedal through history on the "Stille Nacht" tour! This scenic ride takes you through the stunning Austrian countryside while connecting you to the heartwarming story of the famous Christmas carol, "Silent Night" (or "Stille Nacht" in German). Perfect for recreational touring and gravel cyclists, this route offers a delightful mix of beautiful landscapes and cultural landmarks.
Route Description
The “Stille Nacht Tour” begins in Eugendorf, quickly leaving the main roads behind and winding onto quiet farm tracks. This opening stretch towards Anthering is never completely flat: a series of gentle rollers through wide fields and small villages makes for a lively warm-up, with short climbs and flowing descents setting the rhythm.
From Anthering, the route drops down towards the Salzach river, leading you into Oberndorf and across the bridge into the Bavarian town of Laufen. Here, the cultural highlight of the tour awaits: the Stille Nacht Kapelle, where the famous carol was performed for the first time in 1818. It’s a wonderful place to pause and soak up both the history and the riverside atmosphere.
👉 Optional Extension: From Oberndorf/Laufen, riders who still feel fresh can extend the ride with an additional loop to Bürmoos, where the Stille Nacht Museum provides a deeper look into the carol’s history. This detour adds both cultural value and extra kilometers, making the ride more of a day tour.
Back on the main route, the character of the ride changes as you head east: the road ramps up toward the Haunsberg. This is the main climb of the day, a steady effort rewarded with sweeping views over the Salzach valley and the Trumer Lakes region. Once over the summit, a flowing descent takes you down towards Obertrum am See, with its inviting lakeside vibe and cafés — an ideal mid-ride stop.
The final leg loops back south over a series of smaller climbs on quiet farm roads, weaving through open countryside. Passing through Seekirchen am Wallersee, you’ll enjoy a mellow finale on cycleways and village lanes before rolling back into Eugendorf.
This route has everything: rolling farmland, a meaningful historical landmark, one rewarding climb, and plenty of quiet backroads that let you enjoy the rhythm of riding. And with the optional extra Bürmoos loop, it can be tailored into either a focused 50 km tour or a longer cultural exploration.
Conclusion
The "Stille Nacht" tour isn’t just a ride; it’s an adventure through history and nature. Whether you’re cruising on a gravel bike or enjoying the ride on an e-bike, this route promises a memorable experience filled with discovery and joy. So grab your friends, hop on your bikes, and let the journey begin!
