Salzburg's Crafts, Traditions and Nature

The route starts and ends at Salzburg Central Station, making it ideal for a relaxed journey by train, without the need for a car.

From the main station, the route first leads out into the northern Flachgau region. Mostly following well-maintained cycle paths and quiet minor roads, it heads towards Hallwang, Eugendorf and Elixhausen. The tour passes through gently rolling countryside, past meadows, small villages and the first stops showcasing traditional Salzburg crafts and local production.

The route then continues via Anthering back to the Salzach River and follows the river towards the city of Salzburg. From there, it joins the Saalach Cycle Path out towards Wals and on to Großgmain. At the foot of the Untersberg, the landscape becomes especially impressive, with wide views, a striking mountain backdrop and fascinating insights into the region’s economic and cultural history. In particular, traditional forestry and historic marble quarrying have shaped this area for centuries and make the section around the Untersberg a special highlight of the tour.

Via Fürstenbrunn and Grödig, the route continues through the southern part of the circuit. Here too, traces of traditional land use and regional craftsmanship can be found throughout the landscape. The tour then returns to the Salzach, continues on to Elsbethen and finally follows the river comfortably back into the city centre and to Salzburg Central Station.

The route mainly follows cycle paths and small roads. There are also a few gravel sections, as well as longer descents and winding passages. For this reason, the tour is best suited to riders who feel confident handling their bike and are comfortable on changing surfaces.
We recommend riding the full circuit in a relaxed touring pace over two to three days. This leaves enough time for visits, breaks and stops at craft businesses, workshops and culturally interesting places along the route. In addition, shorter standalone loops are available for riders who would prefer a shorter day tour.

Numerous businesses, demonstration workshops and places associated with Salzburg’s craft traditions, regional products and living heritage can be found along the route. This makes the tour an authentic combination of nature, exercise and culture.
