This tour combines culture, history, and landscape into a particularly varied loop between Eugendorf, Salzburg, Hallein, and Bad Dürrnberg.

Route Description

You’ll start in the Salzburg Lake District, roll into the city with its baroque charm, then tackle the sporty climb up the Winterstallstraße to reach the historic salt mine at Bad Dürrnberg. The ride finishes with a relaxed return along the Salzach river, the historic Almkanal, and the former Ischler railway line. A ride full of contrasts!

Start your bike ride in Eugendorf near Salzburg.

The start is in Eugendorf, and from here you roll easily south on bike paths straight into the heart of Salzburg. Already at the entrance to the city, the Salzach with Hohensalzburg Fortress in the background sets the scene perfectly.

The bike path towards Hallein is beautiful to ride along the Salzach river.

From Salzburg, you continue to follow the river south towards Hallein, where the salt history of the region is tangible. Riding through the winding alleys of the old Celtic town and its shops is well worth a short stop. Immediately after Hallein, the sporting challenge begins: the climb up the Winterstallstraße to Bad Dürrnberg. The road is consistently steep, but at the top you’ll reach the striking Salt Mine, a true highlight of the tour, with its deep history and wide views back down into the Salzach valley.

The museum of the Salt Mines in Bad Dürrnberg can be reached by bike and is worth visiting"

After a well-deserved pause, a long descent carries you down into Marktschellenberg. From here, small quiet roads and traffic-free passages guide you north again. A particular gem: the ride along the Almkanal, flowing calmly through meadows and woodland.

Hallein is a prettty city not far from Salzburg and offers great cycling routes.

The finale follows the Ischler railway path, a former rail line turned into a smooth and quiet cycleway. Gentle gradients, silence, and flowing lines through the countryside make this the ideal closing stretch. Finally, you roll back into Eugendorf, completing a unique cultural and sportive loop.

Cycling from Austria to Germany is easy and a great cycling experience.

Conclusion

The Bike & Salt Tour blends urban culture, salt-mining history, and a sporting challenge into one unforgettable ride. You’ll experience Salzburg at its finest, conquer the classic Winterstallstraße climb, and then enjoy a relaxed roll back through meadows, rivers, and forests. Whether on a gravel bike, a road bike with a sense of adventure, or an e‑bike – this route serves up variety, challenge, and plenty of highlights.
