We rode Loose for Max

Friends, bikes, sunshine and good company. Remembering Max the way he would have liked it.

Last Saturday, we gathered at Loose Cycles in Ljubljana for a ride that was a little different from our usual weekend outings. Ride Loose for Max was our way of remembering our dear friend Max Riese, who tragically passed away in September, and bringing together the people and community he cared so much about.

The idea was simple: get together, ride some bikes, share stories and enjoy each other's company. No racing, no chasing segments, no particular hurry to get anywhere. Just a bunch of friends out for a ride.

And we had a pretty good route for the occasion, too.

Back to where it started

The route was no coincidence. Back in December 2023, when Max first visited us in Ljubljana to present his Lynx Trail project, we took him on a ride across Ljubljansko Barje, up to Planinca and along the slopes beneath Krim. Almost three years later, we decided to retrace that ride, this time in his memory.

We rolled out from Loose Cycles and headed towards Ljubljansko Barje, which was still covered in the typical autumn fog. The weather wasn't particularly promising at first, but we knew there was a good chance of finding some sunshine higher up.

The pace was pleasantly relaxed, allowing everyone to chat along the way. Even on the climb towards Planinca, the group stayed more or less together, with conversations continuing all the way to the top. Not something you necessarily expect when a bunch of cyclists get to a hill.

And sure enough, as we gained elevation, we left the fog behind and emerged into beautiful autumn sunshine. The climb was well worth the effort, and the sunny roads beneath Krim made for a particularly enjoyable stretch of riding.

By the time we descended back towards Ljubljansko Barje, the fog had lifted there as well. What started as a rather grey autumn morning had turned into a beautiful sunny day.

More than just a ride

Back on the flats, we made our way to Lepa Žoga, where the riding part of the day ended, but the gathering continued. Bikes were parked, drinks were ordered, and pizzas and hot dogs made their way to the tables. There was plenty of chatting, catching up with old friends and making plans for future adventures.

And that, perhaps, was the most fitting way to remember Max.

Despite his incredible achievements in ultra-distance cycling, Max always cared about much more than kilometres, elevation gain or finishing times. He loved bringing people together, sharing experiences and building a community around a common passion for riding bikes.

Saturday was a reminder of just how much he meant to that community, and how much of what he helped create continues through the people he brought together.

Thanks to everyone who joined us, whether for the ride or just for a drink afterwards. It was great to see so many familiar faces, share some memories and spend a beautiful autumn day together.

See you around, Max 🤍 Ride on!
